What Are the Best Teeth Whitening Treatments?
The best teeth whitening treatments are the ones that are carried out by a dentist. Not only are you certain of safe treatment at a dental clinic but great results with in-clinic laser treatment and/or dental-grade whitening gel to use at home.
Laser Teeth Whitening
Laser teeth whitening is the most effective treatment available, and it is the most expensive. There are several well-known brands of laser whitening systems, and while they may all operate in a slightly different way, there is little distinction between the results they produce.
If you are a suitable candidate for laser teeth whitening, the procedure typically takes around an hour to complete, but this is dependent upon the system used. The dentist thoroughly cleans your teeth before the process begins, removing stubborn stains and tartar. Precautions are taken to protect the soft tissues in your mouth from coming into contact with the concentrated whitening gel applied to the teeth. Thus, cheek retractors, a rubber dam to cover the gums, and protective goggles to shield your eyes from the laser are used.
Once the safety measures are in place, the whitening treatment can begin. The dentist covers the teeth with hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel. The bleaching agents in the gel are activated by the laser, after which the gel is removed. Some systems may require several applications of the gel and laser, whereas others only one. The dentist cleans the teeth thoroughly again after the final application to complete the procedure.
At-Home Teeth Whitening
The at-home whitening kits do not produce as dramatic a whitening effect as laser whitening but still offer a noticeable, if more subtle, result.
This treatment requires that you wear mouthguards containing the whitening gel over your teeth - usually at night - for the duration of your treatment. The dentist will take impressions of your mouth and send these to an off-site laboratory where the mouthguards are custom-made to fit. The dentist will demonstrate how to use the gel and mouthguards, giving you enough gel for a course of treatment (typically between 2 and 4 weeks).
Once you have the mouthguards, you can order more gel from your dentist to top-up the whitening effect on your smile - whether you have previously had laser teeth whitening or at-home whitening.
Am I Suitable for Teeth Whitening?
Although teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure, you should pay heed to the safety tips and precautions surrounding the treatment - which is why it is always recommended you go to a dental professional for your treatment who can advise you accordingly.
Your overall dental health must be good. If you have active gum disease or tooth decay, these will need to be fixed before you can have your teeth whitened.
Some stains are not affected by teeth whitening treatments, for example, if your teeth have antibiotic staining, and you may have to look at other treatment options if you have this type of problem.
